A windy, slow moving, often shallow river makes the Pembina River an excellent choice for floaters and beginner kayakers. Canoes can go on the river but the shallows may cause hang ups.
There are six well trodden access points to the river:
- The Pembina Bridge at Lodgepole AB
- The City Service Bridge at RR 92 and TWP 491A, near Riverside Horse Trails
- The Cynthia Bridge AB-621
- The Easyford Park, Brazeau County
- South of the Entwistle Esso station and west around the rodeo grounds on RR 74A
- Pembina River Provincial Park at Entwistle
Each of the points can be used to make a fun paddle trip on the river. Note these access points are both embankments and trails so wear appropriate footwear as rocks and trails are often slippery and muddy.
The Pembina River average flow rate is 2 kmph to 7 kmph. This is average and dependent on rain flow. Heavy rains lead to hazardous debris to float the river such as large logs.
Always check river height and ensure it is a safe flow before going on the river.
The Pembina River is also a good option for winter cross country skiing. Always check ice thickness before heading on to the river.
